Badaling Great Wall repaired with manual labor

Workers are carrying bricks uphill to repair the Great Wall.
Chinanews, Jun. 12 �C Reparation work for the Badaling Great Wall between
its Nanqilou and Nanshiliulou section was kicked off last Saturday.
Regarded as an archeological site under national-level protection, the
1,245-meters section was not open to tourists. However, it had suffered
from serious damages. It is expected that the reparation work will be
done without the aid of modern technologies, and workers will try to
repair the Great Wall with original stones. The whole repairing work will
last for about a year.
��We will try to use the collapsed stones in the repairing so that the
Great Wall will keep its original look,�� said Mr. Nie, head of the
project. He said that workers would use the same methods as their
ancestors to do the repairing, carrying bricks up the mountain and
building the Great Wall with concrete by hand.
��Workers will have to work on the cliffs, and the most difficult part
will be at the section between Nanqilou and Nanshiliulou, where the Great
Wall meanders 800 meters above sea level. To do the repairing, workers
will have to find the collapsed stones. Those that are too small will not
be re-used. If we need more materials, we will make some new bricks in
the traditional way. These bricks usually weigh 11 kilograms apiece, and
it is expected that some 90,000 new bricks will be needed. All these
bricks will be hand-carried uphill, usually four bricks at a time,�� Nie
said.
He said that the repairing work will not be as simple as people may
think. All the 100 workers involved will receive a week's training before
they start work. The whole project, with a total investment of 7.7
million yuan, is expected to be finished by July next year.
In March 2006, a Great Wall Surveying Training Class was kicked off at
the Badaling section of the Great Wall, which signified that surveying
work for the Great Wall in Beijing area, where it extends for 629
kilometers, was formally launched. In June 2007, a complete record filing
system will be set up for the Great Wall in Beijing.
