Is there any software that would simply show me a translation of any hanzi when i roll my mouse

translation of "be" would appear on a floating tag or to program's own info window.

There are 3 pieces of software that do this (that I know of). One is called Stardict, which I used
to use, and worked pretty well, one called Lingoes, which I've now switched to since I think it's
better than Stardict. Both of these programs are free, however currently Stardict has more
dictionaries available for it. The other program is called Kingsoft Powerword, but it's not free,
and I tried the beta of the 2008 version, but didn't really like it that much.

Also, if you use Firefox, there is an extension called Chinese-Pera Kun, which will give you a
pop-up translation, but it only works in Firefox, whereas the other programs mentioned above work
with almost any Hanzi text you can see in any program.

flameproof -

There is another one, a browser independent freeware one, that work with any Windows application:
Wakan

@mikevwilliams - I haven't tried it but am wondering what you didn't like about it.

btw, after I installed Stardict and started it up, my security software asked me if it was okay to
allow Stardict to monitor my keystrokes and connect to the internet. Nooo! Isn't that what spyware
keyloggers are for?

mikevwilliams -

Luobot, the reasons I didn't like it were because Stardict had more available dictionaries for it,
and I found it a bit slow, however I think the mouseover function had better accuracy than
Stardict. I am happy with Lingoes for the moment anyway.

mirgcire -

I tried Kingsoft Powerword, and its cousin Dr.Eye, but neither of them display hanyu pinyin. This
makes sense because they are made for chinese speaking consumers. I exchanged some emails with the
developers and they thought adding hanyu pinyin was a good idea.

Hi!

The problem is that iconv, the main tool for converting files can not process files of such a big
size!

PS I'm using a Mac, so any UNIX solutions will work + can emulate WinXP

Open the file in vi. Type the following commands:

:set encoding=gb2312
:set fileencoding=utf8
:w myfile.utf8
:q

Vi will be using iconv to do the conversions, but it will possibly be doing it line by line so
iconv should be able to handle it. Make sure you save to a different filename than the original,
just in case something goes wrong and the original 90mb file is lost.

c_redman -

perl -MEncode -ne "binmode STDOUT, ':utf8'; print decode('euc-cn', $_)" < test.gb > test.u8

非常感谢!!!
thanks a lot!
Another solution is: open the file using Wenlin... surprisingly, it can handle 90 mb files

This web page has the best explanation I've come across so far.

pokeyzilla89 -

Thanks!

To quote the article: "It is obligatory to use a measure word when a numeral, a demonstrative
pronoun, or an interrogative pronoun qualifies a noun."

dsrguru -

You're welcome. That's a good way to summarize it.

Shadowdh -

Dsrguru... thanks for the link to the site, looks like a good resource for study...

dsrguru -

No problem. Here's the home page: http://comet.cls.yale.edu/mandarin/content/grammar.htm

renzhe -

Still, there are exceptions, such as 年, 天, 寸, etc.

So you would use a measure word for a month (一个月), but not for days and years (一年,
一天). This page has a list with some of them: http://www.ctcfl.ox.ac.uk/Grammar ex...sure
words.htm

xuechengfeng -

It seems measure words are to be used when you are studying in school. Other than that... it seems
like many situations when in country, people don't use them.

Happy to announce that you can build custom Chinese flashcard decks for printing and delivery on
the Primezero i18n Terminal.

Every search result can be added to your shopping cart for printing. (Just like you, I don't like
getting flashcards I don't need from those generic packs).

I am so glad I can share this printing service with fellow students of Chinese.

PM me if you would like to beta test more products coming soon.

You also can print customized Chinese practice paper sheets by clicking "+ paper" next to
single-character search results. That is completely FREE. Forever. Note that single character
entries show the stroke order for some simplified characters.

Back to work, more products coming soon.

Have fun learning!

geek_frappa -

Excited to share a new feature that I have been testing. You can download your search results for
safe-keeping from the Primezero i18n Terminal (English-Chinese Dictionary) in various formats:
CEDICT, Excel or CSV.

Sample Query 'Starbucks': http://www.primezero.com/terminal/lookup?q=Starbucks

Please note that you can also import the formatted text files into great programs like NJStar and
ZDT Flashcards program. :-)

You can also import lists into your Google Docs Spreadsheets for building flashcard lists.

new feature coming soon. PM me if you want to get free stuff including T-Shirts.

Have fun!

adsotrans.com and the popups we see on newsinchinese.com) to a more comprehensive definition
(something that includes all of the glosses in the database)? Right now Adso chooses the most
likely definition/pos given its understanding of Chinese grammar. I'm not sure that most people
notice this selectivity until the system actually gets something wrong....

The reason the system is built this way is that Adso aims to offer gist translation and other
sorts of generic semantic analysis functionality. Being able to hone down a word to a single
definition is much more useful for search/semantic/translation applications than just showing a
list of possible definitions. I strongly believe that structuring data in a way that enables this
is important for the ability of the open source community to innovate in the long-term.

But maybe this is the wrong approach for data-display, and especially for a project that aims to
make it easy for people to collaborate around language. I've noticed that a lot of users
(especially new contributors) like to pack multiple definitions into the popup windows rather than
add new ones. I usually edit these during the review process, but don't want people to feel
disappointed if their edits "disappear" from one release to the next, especially if they aren't
really gone, but merely restructured. Also, if people really WANT more comprehensive definitions
when they use an annotator, it is easy enough to change the system and get Adso to produce that
sort of output. It's actually much faster to do as well since this eliminates the hard work of
grammatical disambiguation.

Curious if anyone has any thoughts on this. Cross-posted on my blog.

Maybe something they can click on to expand? scrollable.
Potentially make it smarter by offering an option to correct the wrong translation and store the
context and corrected definition in a self improving lookup database.

trevelyan -

That seems to be the consensus on the blog too. Keep the system smart, but expand the range of
ways people can interact with it.

tooironic -

Of course you will need to include all synonyms/possible character combinations. After all,
Chinese is such a context-dependent language, there is no way a computer could always get the word
right. But yeah, a scrollable box/clickable expanding one would really give you the benefits of
both worlds

OK... just tried it and it's a mild version of vodka. Maybe I'm not one for fine subtleties of the
taste, but I can't find any difference in taste from plain old vodka (not the cheap kind with bad
taste and awful burn). It's true that I haven't touched vodka for 8 years now (after having way
too much one day), so I might be wrong. It's also very similar to ţuică (smells like it, too),
which is distilled from plums.

Further research (with the help of Bureaucratist's translation of the name) I found the product
page: http://www.jinliufu.net/ but of course I don't understand anything from it.

I would still like a complete and exact translation of everything on the label.

Label:

Left side is pretty straightforward, net contents, alcohol content.
Center is the brand name, Jinliufu, or Golden Six Happy if you prefer,
Then 福星高照, to be born under a lucky star, which refers to this product range. Can only see
one star on your label, assume you have the one-star version (runs up to five).
Below that you have the company name and address.

Vertical text on the right is 浓香型白酒, 'strongly fragrant baijiu'.

lunarul -

Thanks for the quick translation.
I still don't understand that Golden Six Happy/Fortune name... shouldn't there be a translation
that makes sense?

lunarul -

Just prepared a Mimi and Me, using Jinliufu instead of vodka... The strong aroma of the baijiu
overpowered the amaretto, so if using it instead of vodka, the cocktails need to be changed a
little to compensate this.

Not sure if anyone has posted about this already???

I've recently heard about the addition of some new slang words into the standard Chinese lexicon
following some research conducted by CASS and the Ministry of Education. There were articles in
some of the expat rags including Time Out and China Daily. The articles only listed a few of the
total 171 new terms, such as 断背, 车奴 and 丁宠家庭. But I haven't been able to find the
rest of them. Does anyone know where a comprehensive list can be found?

Many thanks

Hi, ZHWJ,

Thanks for recommending 古文觀止. I visited the local 學林書局 in my hometown of Kuala
Lumpur (Malaysia), and found a copy of it, published by 北京中華書局. It's a great edition
to own because it is printed in 繁體字 Traditional Characters, using the old-type printing font
complete with the original commentaries embedded within the text (I believe it could be a
facsimile of a classic edition!). And unlike the other editions I found, it includes the original
preface written during 康熙's reign.

Of course, given that it is an 'original' edition, meaning there are no modern glossaries (注譯)
and translations (語譯) accompanying it, I had to purchase a separate edition by
台灣三民書局 to assist me with my reading (this was the only other edition I could find that
uses 繁體字 Traditional Characters). This one does not have the original preface, which is a
pity. But no matter, I still like the 中華書局 one better!

ZHWJ wrote: Lu Xun's 中国小说史略 is good literary prose, despite being written around 1930

I have not found a copy of 中國小說史略 yet, but I intend to do so soon. However, I noticed
that most of the fictional works I saw by 魯迅 Lu Xun is written in 白話文 baihuawen. Does
this mean that 中國小說史略 is an exceptional case of 魯迅 Lu Xun using 文言文
wenyanwen? I recall that 魯迅 Lu Xun was a supporter of the 白話文 baihuawen Movement.

The 中华书局 edition of 古文观止 is not a photostat, I believe, but rather a newly-typeset
edition based on an earlier punctuated edition - or at least that's what the editor's introduction
says in my 1963 copy.

Lu Xun compiled 中国小说史略 out of a set of lecture notes, which he then couldn't be
bothered to rewrite before having them formally printed three years later. As for why they were in
wenyan to begin with - it saves on labor for the copyist! From the preface:

Quote:

It's true that 古文观止 is an ideal book for wenyan studying, plus 山海经. I ve no idea
where you live in China and how profound the book you need, but it's not a bad idea to read some
wenyanwen in Chinese textbooks for Chinese senior school students. Classic examples of wenyanwen
are embodied such as 前后出师表 by 诸葛亮; 兰亭集序 by 王羲之, etc.
I recommend 资治通鉴 and 史记 in addition. 三国志 by 陈寿 is also worth reading.

Mark Yong -

Hi, Luoluo,

Thanks for your recommendations!

Quote:

I've no idea where you live in China...

Actually, I live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. But we have an excellent Chinese-language bookstore
here called 學林書局, which imports a wide range of books, and on all sorts of topics, from
China. It was also in this bookstore that I purchased an excellent 2-volume text on the abacus
珠算 (published by 北京出版社).

Quote:

...and how profound the book you need

Actually, the degree of profundity is not too much of a concern for me, but variety is.

What I am really trying to do is collect and read a wide range of 文言文 texts, and not just
limit myself to the standard 四書五經, 莊子, 唐詩, 史記, etc. and other miscellaneous
"pre-modern China educational material" texts - which are often limited to the period spanning the
周 Zhou to 唐 Tang eras only.

So, this means that I would like to read not just a variety of subjects (this can take the form of
literary criticisms, letters & correspondences, government documents, and even fiction), but also
spanning the entire period when 文言文 was used as the written language of the Far East (i.e.
from 周 Zhou all the way to the early-20th century). Also, the writers need not necessarily be
the notable ones, they can also be obscure individuals, too (which means even a letter written by
a son to his parents in 文言文 would be of interest to me!).

This will (hopefully) allow me to appreciate how 文言文 functioned as a living and practical
written language for over two and a half millenia, and also to observe how the the style of
writing gradually evolved over time (thus, the often-overlooked subtle difference between 古文
Classical Chinese and 文言文 Literary Chinese), even while the spoken language gradually
evolved into the various dialects.

Any maybe, just maybe, I might eventually develop some skill at writing in 文言文, too!

Read 梁启超 on government and progress...

I did some research on 梁啟超's works, and found that the 飲冰室合集 is referred to
several times as his representative work. Is this one of his works that you recommend me to read?
I notice the entire text totals 12 volumes, so it may be quite a big commitment (money and
time-wise) to start off with that! Of course, I note that there is also a single-volume 精選
(selections) version of it, so I may start off with that and see how I progress with it.

A friend of mine also mentioned his other work called 少年中國說 (she said Chinese
high-school students have to memorise chunks of it!), but I am not sure if it is in 文言
wenyan... which, as you know, is what I am looking for!

zhwj -

少年中国说 is short; read it for yourself here.

Liang Qichao wrote lots of stuff - I only mentioned government and progress since that's one of
the main reasons people read him these days. Something like 古文观止 is nice for a selection
of "great works," but for most authors, I find that it's nice to read with a sense of purpose - to
understand their views or their place in history rather than merely appreciating their prose style.

But, how should the last bit 太浪费 be interpreted ? According to the dictionaries 浪费 =
waste, squander, extravagant, so that would translate something like "she is too extravagant", or
"she wastes/spends too much (money)", but listening to it I get a feeling it could mean something
like "it is such a waste", "it is such a shame" - is this wrong?

Your interpretations are all reasonable, because the speaker didn't seem to be strict enough in
the structure of the sentences. I guess, however, that by saying "she's not a frugal, thrifty
person" the speaker must have then intended to mean, as you put it, "she wastes/spends too much
(money)"
